Each day I start off with a hot cup of coffee, of course. But before I can let my body sink into a state of morning hunger I have a smoothie.
The goal for any smoothie, in my mind, is 50% veg and 50% fruit. Topped off with a little sugar-free juice (not from concentrate), water or almond milk a smoothie is the perfect way to start your day with tons of nutrition and energy!
Typically my smoothie recipes stem from the same basic ingredients and then I “spice” them up a little by adding different frozen options.Depending on what goes in them will determine the final color of the drink and if it is appealing at all or not. Usually, I get mine to a hearty dark purple/brown hue. Yumm!!! (That's the blueberries mixed with all the greens for ya!)

The Basics:
Kale, stems and tough ribs removed
Spinach, washed and dried
Cucumber, sliced
½ Apple or Pear, sliced
¼ - ½ cup of Juice, water or Almond Milk (I typically use either a CranApple or Pomegranate juice).
Flax seed
The Flavor Changers:
Banana, either a ½ or a whole depending on the size.
Avocado, either a ½ or a whole depending on the size. (You can’t taste it--trust me!)
Frozen Blueberries
Frozen Pineapple
Frozen Strawberries
Frozen Peaches
Frozen Raspberries
Directions:
Place kale and spinach in your blender of choice. Next throw in you sliced cucumbers and any fruit, fresh or frozen. Try different combinations to make it exciting. No smoothie is ever the same in my house.
Finally, top with flax seeds and the juice. Then blend away! It’s a delicious, filling start to any morning and you’re sure to get ahead on your fruit/veg minimum for the day.
